Zurich, Switzerland
The FIFA Headquarters in Zurich boasts a unique design by Tilla Theus and Partner, with five of its eight stories built underground, and with the above ground façade having the appearance of a stretched goal net. This aluminium netting serves as both a design element and a sunshade. Energy efficient technologies were implemented in the total design of the Headquarters as environmental and ecological considerations were of paramount importance. The Headquarters provides office space for 300 employees, plus 240 parking places and the main auditorium for up to 200 people. They also house extensive conference facilities, archives, the technical support rooms and an underground car park. The site also includes an international standard football pitch and training ground.
Project Requirements
The below ground structure had to be watertight without visible movement joints. The construction had to be carried out throughout the year, with no interruptions from the cold conditions of a Switzerland winter. Tight program and cost pressures were combined with high quality and performance standards.
Sika Solutions
The Sika® Watertight Concrete System was chosen for all the under-ground works. The system comprises of Sika® Watertight Concrete, which was selected to construct all basement floors and walls, with Sika® Waterbars used to seal the movement and construction joints. General Sika concrete admixtures were also used throughout the construction along with other Sika products and systems. Sika Switzerland were asked to provide detailed advice and on-site support throughout the whole of the design and construction.
